BASE invites scientists from all disciplines who are interested in an interdisciplinary and international exchange to learn more about global findings from the nuclear social sciences, humanities, cultures and the arts to discuss their relevance for nuclear safety.
Dealing with nuclear waste in the context of nuclear safety interdisciplinary
Dealing with nuclear waste in the context of nuclear safety is a socio-technical challenge. A society's values, culture and political identities influence how and whether nuclear technologies, including nuclear waste management technologies, are developed and used – or not.
At the same time, technologies impact and transform those societies. The legal responsibilities of BASE, be it with regard to site selection, nuclear safety during dismantling and interim storage or the Konrad, Asse and Morsleben repositories, are embedded in socio-technical systems.
The knowledge gained in the area of technology and society supports our understanding by highlighting the connections and dependencies between nuclear technologies and disposal technologies and social developments.
International exchange to tackle complex challanges
Against this background, it is essential to have an active exchange and to develop ways of understanding between the disciplines working on the complex challenges of nuclear waste management.
In addition to interdisciplinary exchange, international exchange is also highly relevant to understand how different societies with different values, cultures and political identities make the same or different choices in the field of nuclear power and nuclear waste management.
