Search for a repository: Federal Office to present simulation game at didacta education fair
press release
Stand: 2023.02.16
How does the search for a for high-level proceed in Germany? How can teachers incorporate this topic into their lessons? The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE) will be presenting information and classroom materials at the didacta education fair in Stuttgart, Messepiazza 1, Stand 7A12, Hall 7a, from Tuesday, 7 March, to Saturday, 11 March 2023. BASE supervises the search for a repository for high-level radioactive waste, and organises public participation.
Students learn about political participation
The topic of public participation in the search is particularly suitable for teaching pupils about political participation and democratic processes. They can practise how to take different perspectives, how to argue, and how to come to an agreement on a polarising topic. BASE representatives will be available to provide information for teachers and other multipliers at the exhibition stand, or via email at dialog@base.bund.de. Teachers can pick up the game materials and an explanation on how to play the simulation game directly at the stand. The BASE exhibition suche:x will also provide information on the background and the current status of the repository search. Our staff will be happy to answer any questions.
Teaching material at the stand
Teaching material at the stand
In the simulation game, pupils will re-enact a fictitious dialogue format: The town of "Mitthausen" is located in a region that is being considered for a possible site. Pupils take on the roles of citizens, representatives of municipalities, environmental associations, etc., and exchange views on the opportunities and challenges involved in participating in the repository search. The game materials are available in two versions: one for grades 9 and 10, and one for grades 11 and 12. The game can be played by approx. 14 to 26 players, and usually takes 180 minutes to play. The game materials and an accompanying handout are also available for download at www.endlagersuche-infoplattform.de/bildungsmaterialien
If you have any questions, please contact dialog@base.bund.de. Further information on the search can be found at www.endlagersuche-infoplattform.de
