    How long are containers with high-level radioactive waste technically safe? And which container is suitable for which repository? The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management has initiated two new research projects under the leadership of the Federal Institute for Materials Research and Testing. Both projects began in April 2023, and will each run for three years.

    Lithuania has provided Germany with initial information on the Lithuanian search for a repository site. German citizens are invited to learn about and give feedback on the project from now on. BASE will forward the submissions to Lithuania.

  • Nuclear phase-out - nuclear safety challenges remain

    Today, the German Bundestag approved the Federal Government's draft bill to amend the Atomic Energy Act. In doing so, the Bundestag decided that the last three nuclear power plants still in operation in Germany will be shut down by 15 April 2023 at the latest. Yet, there is a long way to go before the nuclear phase-out is complete. Many nuclear safety challenges remain.

  • Information event on Swiss repository - BASE coordinates cross-border participation Kategorie: Site Selection Date: 2022.09.19

    On the occasion of the site announcement for the Swiss repository, the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE) will host a public information event at 7pm on Thursday, 22 September. The Swiss Federal Office of Energy and Nagra will explain the reasons for selecting the Nördlich Lägern site, and answer questions from the public at Waldshut town hall.

  • Switzerland proposes nuclear repository near German border Kategorie: Site Selection Date: 2022.09.11

    Switzerland's National Cooperative for the Disposal of Radioactive Waste (Nagra) has proposed a repository site in Nördlich Lägern, north of Zurich. The municipality of Hohentengen am Hochrhein in the district of Waldshut in Baden-Württemberg is located only a few kilometres to the northwest of the site. The planned repository is meant to accommodate all of Switzerland's radioactive waste.

  • Final repository in Finland: German population can give their view Kategorie: Site Selection Date: 2022.08.15

    Finland plans to put its final repository for high-level radioactive waste into trial operation next year - the German population can also comment on this. There is currently an opportunity to submit comments on the Finnish application for an operating licence. The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management will collect the German submissions until 9 September 2022.
