    The 68th General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) will take place in Vienna from 16 to 20 September. Delegations from all IAEA member states meet at the General Conference to discuss issues of nuclear safety, nuclear security and non-proliferation.

    Sybille Schultz-Hüskes assumed her duties today as the new Vice President of the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE). One of the key responsibilities of the 53-year-old lawyer in her capacity as Vice President will be to act as a permanent representative for President Christian Kühn.

    The Bavarian Administrative Court rejected a complaint filed by five residents against the Gundremmingen interim storage facility. According to the court, the storage of nuclear fuel is safe for the licensed storage period.

    With the shutdown of the last three remaining nuclear power plants Isar 2, Emsland and Neckarwestheim 2 on April 15, 2023, the commercial use of nuclear energy in Germany ended. An estimated 27,000 cubic meters of highly radioactive waste remains after decades of nuclear energy use. A final storage facility must now be found.

  • New BASE President Christian Kühn in office Kategorie: BASE Date: 2024.02.15

    Christian Kühn took office today as the new President of the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE). Kühn was welcomed by the 450 BASE employees both at the headquarters in Berlin-Charlottenburg as well as online at the Salzgitter, Cologne and Bonn sites, and gave an initial outlook on his future work.

    The President of the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE), Wolfram König, will be retiring today, 31 January 2024. Wolfram König was the first President to be appointed to the Federal Office on 1 August 2016.

    There is no final repository for high-level radioactive waste from nuclear power plants ready for operation anywhere in the world. At the same time, more and more such waste is being produced. The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE) conducts research on the safe handling and storage of radioactive waste in the present and the future. To promote scientific exchange in this field, BASE will host the second international and interdisciplinary forum on the topic of safe radioactive waste disposal.
