  • BASE Head of Department representing Germany at IAEA Conference Kategorie: Nuclear safety Date: 2023.03.14

    Representatives of nuclear regulatory authorities from all over the world exchange views at the "International Conference on Effective Nuclear and Radiation Regulatory Systems". BASE Head of Department Mareike Rüffer also took part in a panel discussion on the reconstruction and shutdown of nuclear power plants.

  • Search for a repository site: BASE on tour in Germany Kategorie: Site Selection Date: 2023.03.08

    Final preparations are underway before, in April 2023, the BASE Infomobile will start touring Germany again, to provide information about the search for a repository site and the possibilities for participation. The information tour will start on 17 April in Schwerin, and then continue on to Lüneburg.

  • Review of International Transport Regulations for Radioactive Material Kategorie: Interim storage facilities Date: 2023.03.07

    The cornerstone was laid in the IAEA's revision process for the International Regulations for the Safe Transport of Radioactive Material. The regulations are of great importance for Germany, as they form the basis for national regulations. Therefore, BASE will also closely support the revision process.

  • BASE launches doctoral programme Kategorie: Research Date: 2023.02.08

    BASE is launching an interdisciplinary training programme for doctoral students in cooperation with the Technical University of Berlin. Ms. Fanny Böse is the first doctoral student to have started her dissertation at BASE in the scope of this programme. Her thesis will address "Innovation-economic questions for the socio-technical system of nuclear power in the context of the socio-ecological transformation".

  • Discussion Series: Artificial Intelligence in Nuclear Waste Management Kategorie: Site Selection Date: 2023.02.03

    What are the potentials and limitations of using artificial intelligence (AI) in nuclear waste management? BASE has launched a new discussion series with selected experts to get to the bottom of this question. The kick-off event on 1 December made it clear that AI methods certainly hold potential for the disposal of radioactive waste.

  • Search for a repository in France: application for construction licence submitted Kategorie: Site Selection Date: 2023.01.18

    The next step in the French search for a final repository: the implementer Andra has submitted the construction licence application for the planned deep geological repository Cigéo. In the Meuse/Haute-Marne region, around 83,000 cubic metres of high-level radioactive waste and long-lived intermediate-level radioactive waste are to be stored by the end of the 2030s.

  • The timetable for the repository search Kategorie: Site Selection Date: 2022.11.17

    The Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung mbH (BGE) has announced that the search for a site for a high- level radioactive waste repository will take considerably longer than previously known. According to the Site Selection Act, the aim is for the Bundestag to decide on the site in 2031. According to public announcements, the timeframe for a decision on the site is now said to be 2046 to 2068.

    The public hearing in the licensing procedure for the new construction of the ESTRAL interim transport cask storage facility in Lubmin (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) will begin on Tuesday, 1 November 2022 at the Kulturbahnhof in Greifswald.
