With the entry into force of the Site Selection Act on 23 July 2013, the German Bundestag laid the first foundations for a new start in the search for a repository site. This was a breakthrough after decades of debate about the use of nuclear energy and the path towards a repository for high-level radioactive waste. After evaluation and adaptation of the law, the search was launched in 2017. It is time for an interim assessment.

From May 10th to July 16th, the interested public was invited to submit proposals for contributions and questions on the subject of the search for a repository in Germany and thus to help shape the program of the 2nd Repository Search Forum.

What do people in Germany know about the repository site selection procedure? What questions, ideas and wishes do they have? A BASE research project entitled "Repository Site Search in Germany: Knowledge, Attitudes and Needs - Repeated Representative Survey (EWident)" investigated the aforementioned questions. The findings of the study are now available. In addition, the survey research data will be published by BASE, and made available for further research projects for the first time.

The communities bordering interim storage facilities for high- level radioactive waste must be able to see that progress is being made in the search for a repository site in Germany, and that the interim storage facilities are not gradually being turned into a substitute for a final repository. Thus the statement BASE presented at an annual meeting of the Association of Site Communities with Nuclear Facilities in Germany (ASKETA) in Rheinsheim near Philippsburg.

Interested members of the public are invited to submit ideas for the Repository Search Forum (FE) by 16 July 2023, and to help shape the programme with their contributions. The forum will take place in Halle (Saale) on 17 and 18 November 2023, and is open to all interested.

The licensing procedure for the interim storage of German waste in the Isar interim storage facility in Bavaria has been completed. A transport licence is required to repatriate the seven containers with high-level radioactive waste from Sellafield.

The temperatures of containers with high-level radioactive waste constitute a relevant safety aspect of both the repository site search as well as the design and construction of a repository. The relevant actors in the site selection procedure presented their approach and the existing research findings.
