Finding and understanding information

Everyone should be able to search the archived data as easily as possible. That's why BASE would like to provide an online platform on which everyone can research independently. There will also be support for the public in searching analogue documents.

Finding and understanding information

The long-term documentation will offer various tools for finding and understanding the processed information in its analogue and digital inventories.

Building on BASE's internal inventories, tools will be developed for the public. Searching through complex collections will be made easier with finding aids, for example.

The aim is to provide an online platform where anyone can do their own research. In addition, specialised staff on site will offer personal and individual support for:

  • using the finding aids,
  • researching the various collections and
  • understanding the processed content.

BASE would like to provide all citizens with access to environmental information within the framework of the Environmental Information Act (UIG).

The information and knowledge resources of the long-term documentation will include a wide range of documents from the fields of safety and socio-technology. There are, for example, many technical reports and expert opinions from the various stages of nuclear waste management. These documents are sometimes difficult for interested laypersons to understand. Knowledge management measures are used to improve the comprehensibility and clarity of important data and documents:

  1. Data and information from both analogue and digital collections are linked
  2. Background information is provided, technical terms are explained and relevant contexts are presented
  3. A standardised vocabulary is created so that terms and technical expressions become generally understandable

These measures contribute to the comprehensibility of the site selection process and to the preservation of safety-relevant repository knowledge.
