Nuclear technology
Following the nuclear phase-out, will nuclear technology still be used in Germany? What other technologies are being researched worldwide? In addition to monitoring developments in German nuclear facilities, BASE also tracks international developments in nuclear technology.
Nuclear technology is the application of nuclear processes and radioactive materials for a variety of purposes. The primary use of nuclear technology is the utilisation of nuclear fission processes to generate electricity in nuclear power plants.
Despite the closure of Germany's last nuclear power plants in April 2023, other nuclear facilities will continue operation.
BASE therefore monitors the status of
- Nuclear power plants and their decommissioning after shutdown
- Research reactors, and
- Nuclear fuel supply and disposal facilities
in Germany.
A number of new developments in the field of nuclear technology are underway worldwide. Many countries are considering implementing the following technologies:
- Small Modular Reactors (SMR)
- Alternative reactor concepts
- Partitioning and transmutation (P&T)
- Nuclear fusion
It is crucial for BASE to possess a comprehensive understanding of these technologies in order to effectively contribute to nuclear safety discussions at the national and international levels.
