Tasks and duties of BASE

BASE is responsible for reviewing and monitoring the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management. We see ourselves as a regulatory and also a technical authority that performs both supervisory and licensing functions.

Tasks and duties of BASE

As the supervisory authority for the disposal of radioactive waste, we monitor the implementation of the site selection procedure and supervise the construction, operation and decommissioning of the Konrad and Morsleben repository projects and the Asse II mine.

When it comes to participation, we ensure that the procedural steps in the search for a final storage site are transparent from the outset. BASE is responsible for organising the procedure involving the statutory committees and participation formats.

As the licensing authority, we decide on the admissibility of transports and the storage of high-level radioactive waste in accordance with the legal regulations.

As the competent authority, we contribute our expertise in nuclear waste disposal and nuclear safety to the further development of the regulations. Our work is focused on research questions falling within the remit of our respective areas of responsibility, and we are committed to international cooperation.

As BASE, we also take care of the long-term documentation of all records and data that are important for the interim and final storage of radioactive waste.
