Supervisory tasks of BASE
BASE is responsible for both control and supervision tasks in the field of nuclear safety, and for overseeing the repository site selection procedure. In addition, BASE performs technical and content-related tasks within the framework of the law. Among other things, it advises the BMUV.
The disposal of radioactive waste must meet high safety standards to protect people and the environment in the short and long term. With the establishment of the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE), the legislator has strengthened and focused the control and supervision tasks in the area of nuclear safety. In addition, BASE is responsible for supervising the search for a repository site for high-level radioactive waste in Germany, which began in 2017.
The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV) has overall political responsibility for waste management. It monitors BASE as part of its technical and legal supervision.
