The last nuclear power stations in Germany are due to go offline in 2022. However, the country still has to look for a permanently safe place to dispose of its radioactive waste to finally close the chapter on nuclear power generation. The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BfE) is inviting people to attend an information evening in Potsdam on 13 June 2019 to show how the search is progressing, who is involved and how citizens can participate.

The evening in Potsdam is part of a series of meetings taking place across Germany under the heading of “Looking for a disposal facility”; they are geared towards local people. The BfE, acting as the process manager, is informing people about how the search is progressing and how citizens can participate in the search procedure in many different ways with their questions, requests and own ideas. The company commissioned to perform the work, Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung (BGE) mbH, (the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal) will provide information about the specific tasks. National Citizens’ Oversight Committee (NBG), which has been appointed by the Bundestag (German parliament) to mediate between the general public and the parties involved, will also be there to answer questions.

In addition to Potsdam, the following meetings have been planned so far:

17 June in Hanover,
20 June in Magdeburg,
27 June in Stuttgart,
3 July in Dresden,
4 July in Munich.

The adoption of the Site Selection Act in May 2017 marked the start of the search for a disposal facility for high-level radioactive waste in Germany. The BfE is monitoring the search procedure and is consulting the general public. A public-sector company, Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung (BGE) mbH, has been appointed to conduct the search. It is currently assessing geological data from all over Germany and has announced that it will publish the first results about which areas might be suitable for further exploration in 2020.
