The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BfE) is inviting people to attend the 12th meeting of the working group known as “Monitoring the area around the Asse mine” at Schöppenstedt town hall. The experts’ discussions are open to interested members of the general public. The BfE is the supervisory body for Asse II mine and heads the working group that is monitoring the surrounding area.
Both the operator of Asse II mine, Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung (BGE) mbH, (the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal), and an independent company are continually monitoring the area around the Asse II mine. Samples of air, water, soil and grass are examined and the measurements are published in quarterly and annual reports. The “Directive on Emission and Immission Monitoring of Nuclear Facilities” (REI) forms the basis for all the measurements when monitoring the surrounding area.

The agenda for the upcoming meeting is expected to include the following points:

1. Welcome by the BfE
2. Monitoring emissions (BGE)
3. 2018 annual report by the operator (BGE)
4. 2018 annual report by the independent measuring company (LUFA-ITL)
5. List of participants and make-up of the working group
6. Discussions
