The disposal of high-level radioactive waste in Germany is a task that involves every facet of society and every generation. The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BfE), Bundesgesellschaft für Endlagerung (BGE) mbH, (the Federal Company for Radioactive Waste Disposal) and the National Citizens’ Oversight Committee (NBG), which are the major players in the site selection procedure, all agree that it is particularly important to involve young people in the search for a disposal site. The target group of young people and young adults involves persons aged between 14 and 30.

Ideas workshop with a format that is still not clear

The three major players are jointly organising a meeting for young people and young adults during the fourth quarter of 2019; they wish to involve the young generation in the site selection procedure as early as possible and arouse and encourage their interest in the project. The format is still unclear, but it is designed to offer a framework where young people can independently and creatively develop ideas and make recommendations on how to appeal to and involve the young generation in the site selection procedure. The Site Selection Act (StandAG) provides the basis for organising different ways of participation.

Preparation workshop

A preparation workshop is being held on this topic in Berlin on 10 May 2019. The aim is to draw up recommendations for the format to involve young people in the autumn. The workshop is geared towards full-time and voluntary (young) people from institutions, who know how to involve young people, and towards experts in youth participation. What needs to be considered when organising the format for participation? What could motivate young people or young adults to become involved in the site selection procedure? What questions do they have about the process? These are the topics that we wish to discuss.
