BASE provides inter-institutional information on Ukraine's nuclear situation
The ever-evolving situation in Ukraine raises many questions - also about the potential dangers of nuclear power and radioactivity.
The situation conjures up memories of Chernobyl or Fukushima, and many people are preoccupied at this time. This leads to speculations and concerns, even fears.
BASE considers it a duty to expertly address and accompany this very justified interest in nuclear safety issues. And we openly say: nuclear power does pose dangers, even in normal operation. The uncontrolled leakage of radioactivity must, therefore, always be avoided. What is new is that, in the conflict in Ukraine, for the first time, nuclear facilities have become the target of armed conflict.
Providing you with information and enabling you to assess the situation further is an important task and challenge for us. As a result of the Chernobyl and Fukushima reactor accidents in particular, Germany has created the necessary prerequisites to assess various scenarios and impacts, to evaluate situations and developments as early as possible and thus to do everything that is needed to protect its population.
On this page and other corresponding links, we aim to give you a comprehensive and independent overview of the information provided by our federal office and other competent institutions dealing with the topic of nuclear power and radioactivity.
That is why you will find expert information not only from BASE but also from other reliable federal sources. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to contact us or any of the institutions mentioned directly. It is our mission to provide you with knowledge and assistance for further orientation. We thank you for your trust.
