Brunsbüttel interim storage facility: Review of objections starts

Year of issue 2017
Date 2017.03.16

About 300 citizens have used the first step of the public participation procedure in the licensing procedure for the Brunsbüttel interim storage facility to raise objections. The major part of the objections were raised in the form of collected signatures. 18 persons have submitted their objections and criticisms individually.

The objections mainly refer to safety aspects. For example, citizens address the protection against terrorist attacks, earthquake and flood protection and the radiation protection of the population and the environment. Also the limited storage time of 40 years has been mentioned frequently.

Once it has reviewed the objections, the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BfE) as the licensing authority will invite to a public hearing. The comments will then be debated together with the applicant, Kernkraftwerk Brunsbüttel GmbH & Co. oHG. The BfE will take into account the results of the public hearing in the nuclear licensing procedure for the interim storage facilities, i.e. each objection will be addressed. Notice of the date of the public hearing will be given in good time.

With the review of the objections, the first step of the public participation procedure in the new licensing procedure for the Brunsbüttel interim storage facility will conclude. From 11 January up to and including 10 March 2017, the application documents of the interim storage facility operator are publicly accessible in Brunsbüttel, Salzgitter, Berlin and on the internet
