BASE will chair the session on "Deep Geological Disposal – Geosciences behind regulatory, technical and social challenges: best practices and lessons learned" at the EGU 2024.

Europe's largest annual geoscientific conference will take place in Vienna from 14 April to 19 April 2024, with around 16,000 experts expected to attend. Together with several research institutions, the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE) will host the interdisciplinary session on final disposal projects, thus contributing to an international scientific exchange in the field of final disposal.

Final disposal and social sciences: The call for abstracts is still open

What lessons have we learnt from the repository projects so far? Participants will be asked to examine this question during the event. More specifically, the session will focus on the close connection between the geosciences and the regulatory challenges. It will also promote an exchange on various disposal concepts, national and transnational public relations work, participation programmes, siting concepts and legal frameworks.

We encourage geoscientists and other scientists working in the field of waste management or related topics to submit abstracts for this session.

Please note that the deadline for submitting abstracts will be 10 January.

The organisers

The European Geoscience Union (EGU) is the umbrella organisation of European geoscientists. It is the largest European scientific organisation in the field of geosciences and related disciplines.

The BASE session will be organised in cooperation with the Swiss Federal Nuclear Safety Inspectorate ENSI (CH), the Institute for Radiological Protection and Nuclear Safety IRSN (FR) and the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory LBNL (US).
