New construction of Lubmin interim storage facility: Discussion date set

ESTRAL in Lubmin Zwischenlager in LubminSource: EWN GmbH

The public hearing in the licensing procedure for the new construction of the ESTRAL interim transport cask storage facility in Lubmin (Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania) will begin on Tuesday, 1 November 2022 at the Kulturbahnhof in Greifswald.

The invitation is aimed at persons who submitted objections to the project in time, the applicant EWN Entsorgungswerk für Nuklearanlagen GmbH, as well as other authorities and experts consulted by the authorities. The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE) is organising the event.

The aim of the discussion is to explain and discuss the objections in a direct exchange. Discussions at the hearing will include safety aspects, environmental impacts of the new construction, and protection against terrorist attacks. If necessary, BASE will consider the results of the hearing in the approval procedure.

More than 200 citizens submitted objections between 11 February and 11 April 2022. Most of these were collective objections on signature lists.

Earliest possible storage from 2027

New federal requirements for securing the storage of Castor casks are the reason for the new construction at the Interim Storage North Facility. Since, according to EWN GmbH, a structural retrofit of the existing interim storage facility is not feasible, the company is planning to build a new replacement transport cask storage facility in the immediate vicinity. The current planning of EWN GmbH provides for a four-year construction period and earliest possible storage of the 74 transport and storage containers in 2027.

The public hearing will begin on Tuesday,

1 November,
at the Kulturbahnhof Greifswald
Osnabrücker Str. 3
17489 Greifswald.

The meeting will start at 3pm and, if necessary, will be continued at 8am on the following days.

Formal notice of the hearing will be published in the Federal Gazette, the Ostseezeitung, the Nordkurier and on this website.
