General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA)
BASE was part of the German delegation to participate in the 66th IAEA General Conference in Vienna. All IAEA member states regularly meet at this annual conference to consider and approve the organisation’s budget, and to discuss questions of nuclear safety and non-proliferation.
BASE exhibition on the search for a repository in Germany
At this year’s conference, BASE presented an exhibition on the German site selection procedure for a repository for high-level radioactive waste. Delegations from all member states as well as staff from international organisations were provided with comprehensive information on the search for a final repository site, and had the opportunity to discuss with BASE staff between 26 and 30 September.
International exchange on final disposal
BASE aims to promote the international exchange on safety in nuclear waste disposal, as this is a worldwide challenge waiting to be resolved. The intensive discussions focused on the current status of the repository and on questions of public participation.
Highlights included the opening of the exhibition by BMUV State Secretary Stefan Tidow and the visits of EU Commissioner for Energy Kadri Simson and IAEA Secretary General Rafael Grossi to the German stand. BASE also provided technical expertise to the members of the German delegation in the context of the bilateral and multilateral talks and negotiations.
