Interdisciplinary Research Symposium on the Safety of Nuclear Disposal Practices

The Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE) is inviting people to attend a research symposium from November 10 until November 12, 2021: the meeting is an invitation to all scientists to present and discuss the results of their research work related to nuclear disposal beyond just their own discipline.
The symposium will adopt the approach of considering research work within the complete field of nuclear disposal: ranging from the shutdown of nuclear facilities to storing and conditioning radioactive waste and even disposing of it at great depths underground. This will not only include technical topics, but also other issues like public participation, a safety culture or risk communications.
Main Topic: Safety of Nuclear Disposal
The symposium will focus on both fundamental and practical issues related to the topic of safety: what level of knowledge is available regarding the safe disposal of the legacy of the nuclear era – and which questions are still unanswered? This complex subject area is not only a technical challenge, but one affecting the whole of society too. The conference will appeal to both technical/scientific disciplines and those in the humanities and social sciences.
The symposium will be geared towards national and international scientists and specifically young researchers working in the sciences, humanities and social sciences too. Interested members of the public will also have the opportunity to participate in the meeting. A hybrid format is planned for the symposium – i.e. both analogue and digital.
