Research at BASE
News on current research
The second international research symposium on the safety of nuclear waste disposal, safeND, took place from September 13th to 15th, 2023.
BASE uses research as an essential tool to further develop safety in nuclear waste management. Research challenges existing knowledge, concepts and methods, examines unresolved questions and aims to fill knowledge gaps. This is crucial especially with regard to safety aspects that need to be continuously adapted to the state of the art in science and technology.
The research projects of the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management cover the following areas of responsibility:
BASE already has a long tradition of research in some of these areas, whilst others pose new challenges.
Research thrives on exchange and interdisciplinarity. This is also reflected in Germany's diverse research environment. Research at BASE research covers the subject area of nuclear safety as a whole. A special budget item is dedicated to independent research projects at BASE.
