1st Research symposium: safeND 2021

Logo: Interdisciplinary research symposium on the safety of nuclear disposal practices "safeND"

From 10 to 12 November 2021, the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE) invites you for the first time to the research symposium safeND. The event is an invitation to all scientists to present and discuss their research results related to nuclear waste management, fostering interactions and conversations beyond just their own disciplines.

The symposium will encompass research for the entire field of nuclear waste management, focusing on both fundamental and application-oriented current research results and projects related to the following topics:

  • Decommissioning of nuclear facilities
  • Storage and transport of radioactive waste
  • Disposing of high-level as well as low- and intermediate-level radioactive waste
  • Selecting a disposal site
  • Participation processes for projects involving nuclear safety and disposal
  • A safety culture and communications related to nuclear disposal
  • Socio-technical and legal aspects of nuclear disposal

During the symposium, intra- and interdisciplinary discussions will be of central importance.

Target group

This interdisciplinary symposium will specifically addresses both technical and natural science disciplines as well as the humanities and social sciences. The symposium is oriented towards international scientists, including an explicit focus on early career scientists.

Scientific Committee

The research symposium safeND is supported by a committee of scientists:
