Safety of Nucleare Waste Management

Facts and figures on nuclear fuel transports

With under 500 transports per year, the transports of nuclear fuel and large sources licensed by the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BASE) are only a small portion of the total number of transports of radioactive materials. The largest number of radioactive material transports are carried out for measurement, research and medical purposes. These are not licensed by BASE but are subjected to other regulations.

The transport licenses granted by BASE may be effective for single or several transports. They are in principle temporary. The longest possible validity is three years. The license holder is not obliged to make use of it.

The following tables give a survey of the number of licenses granted by BASE in the past years and the number of transports carried out.

The following survey shows

  • how many licenses were granted by BASE between 2009 and 2019 and
  • how many transports of nuclear fuel and large sources were carried out on the basis of these licenses.

In detail: Transports of nuclear fuel carried out in 2018 broken down by transport mode

The by far greatest part of the nuclear fuel is transported by road. In 2018, 372 transports were carried out, ca. 80%.

Another common practice to transport nuclear fuel is shipment by sea. Of the altogether 94 shipments by sea carried out in 2018, 34% are allocated to transit traffic, 17% to import traffic and 42% to export traffic.
