Reportable events with enhanced radioactivity discharges in German nuclear power plants
Since they were commissioned, the altogether about 6,500 reportable events having occurred in nuclear power plants in Germany also included events where the discharges of radioactivity into the environment were enhanced, compared with the normal operational level. In altogether eleven cases, limit values in the installations of the former Federal Republic of Germany, which are subject to reporting, were exceeded during that time.
Not every increase in radioactivity discharges with the exhaust air or waste water that is above the normal operational level is subject to reporting. In no case were the limits relating to the discharge of radioactive materials set out in the Radiation Protection Ordinance exceeded as a result of increased discharges.
A list of reportable events with enhanced discharges into the environment in the process of which limits officially defined by the authorities were exceeded, is provided by the BASE on the internet (only in German).
The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety (BMUV) prepares an annual report for the bodies of the German Bundestag and Bundesrat on the radiation exposure to the population resulting from the discharge of radioactive materials from nuclear installations (Umweltradioaktivität und Strahlenbelastung: Jahresbericht, only in German).
