On 30 July 2016, the federal tasks of supervision and licensing in the fields of repository site selection, nuclear safety, interim storage and repository surveillance were transferred from the Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) to the Federal Office for the Safety of Nuclear Waste Management (BfE) foundet in 2014.

How dangerous is exposure to low-dose radiation?

Protracted exposure to radiation can increase the risk of cancer and leukaemia even at low doses. This assumption is supported by the so-called INWORKS study published recently. Based on theoretical considerations, international radiation protection systems assume that there exists no safe threshold for radiation exposure.

Storage/Transports 2011/70/Euratom EU Directive on the Disposal of Radioactive Waste

On 19 July 2011, the Council of the European Union passed a Directive for the Community framework on the responsible and safe disposal of spent fuel elements and radioactive waste, wich became effective on 23 August 2011. In line with the requirements of the Directive, Germany submitted its National Waste Management Programme (NaPro) to the Commission in August 2015.

In its brochure published in 2010, "No final repository possible in Bavaria. Geological facts and backgrounds", the Bavarian Environment Agency (LfU) assesses the possibility of seeking and finding a location in Bavaria and comes to the conclusion that the minimum geological requirements for a final repository for radioactive waste are not fulfilled in Bavaria.
